LEGO SMART Play™: A New Era of Play Has Begun
For the first time in nearly 50 years, LEGO® is pushing its iconic bricks into a whole new dimension of play. Unveiled at CES 2026, LEGO SMART Play™ isn’t just a new product line; it’s a dramatic shift in the LEGO System-in-Play that invites builders to interact with their creations in a completely different way.
What is LEGO SMART Play™?
LEGO SMART Play™ introduces a set of new elements, including the small yet powerful SMART Brick, SMART Tags, and SMART Minifigures, designed to react, respond and interact with other elements in real time.
At the core of the platform is the SMART Brick, a standard-sized 2×4 LEGO brick packed with world-first micro-engineering. Beneath its familiar exterior lies a custom ASIC chip, wireless charging, motion sensors, light detectors, microphones and a miniature synthesiser-driven speaker.
When paired with SMART Tags and special SMART Minifigures, this platform brings sets to life. Builds can react to movement, trigger light and sound effects, recognise gestures, and even respond to nearby components. All of this happens without the need for a screen, app-driven overlay or complex setup. The only things required are bricks, imagination and physical play.
A New Standard Since the Minifigure
LEGO itself has described SMART Play™ as one of the most significant evolutions in the LEGO System-in-Play since the introduction of the LEGO minifigure in 1978. That’s no small claim.
The minifigure fundamentally changed how generations engaged with builds, turning static models into storytelling tools with characters and identities. Now, LEGO appears poised to take that one step further: creating bricks that don’t just represent action, but participate in it.
What’s Launching & When
LEGO has confirmed that SMART Play™ will officially launch on March 1st, 2026, with pre-orders opening from January 9th across LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and select global retailers.
The first sets designed for SMART Play™ will be part of the LEGO Star Wars™ programme, making the galaxy far, far away the first playground for this new interactive system. These “All-In-One” sets will include:

At least one SMART Minifigure
SMART Tags to unlock contextual reactions
Brick-built Star Wars scenes and functions that play back based on real-world actions
